March

back     Mustangs Of The Month     next >

Meet Magnum......a striking little dun stallion of The Little Book Cliffs with exceptional good looks!

A stalky little guy, he's a package full of everything you could ever imagine a wild mustang to be......

He has come to be everything that surrounds him.....the earth....the shadows  .....the canyons themselves.....

....100% MUSTANG!!.....well adapted to these rough and rugged canyons.

Not far off is one of Magnum's mares, Tonopah, with her month old foal, little Siesta. Settling in for awhile to rest in this protected and hidden place, Tonopah stays on the alert watching over her.

As is the case with most wild horse bands, family changes can occur often. Over the course of winter, Magnum had lost his entire family to other stallions. Quite the surprise to all, the following spring, Magnum had made the long journey from the lower canyons to the upper ranges of The Little Book Cliffs where he had never been before.

So striking!......yet all alone and in a whole new world to explore and learn about....but he was focused and he was on a mission....to get him a mare or two!

Mr. Flashy....... circling around an older stallion and his small band, Magnum was in hopes of picking up a little filly....his attempts failed and he was only spotted a time or two through out the rest of the summer...still alone.....

In time, determination and persistance pays off!....obviously with no success on the upper ranges that summer, Magnum makes the long haul back to the lower canyons and manages to take back his mare Tonopah and little Siesta.....my how she has grown!.....and Magnum reclaims his new son, "Pistol".

A good lookin' little colt......Magnum's son, Pistol. Except for the little star, he's a spittin' image of Dad!

Spending time with the kids....Magnum and his offspring.....Siesta and Pistol.

What a pretty little mare Siesta has turned into! Tonopah, you have done a fine job of raising her!.......

Time to gather the family and move on.....Magnum takes the lead.....

Mamma moves up front now with the kids as Magnum follows from behind...keeping a close eye on his little family.

Watching them disappear into the vast canyon, I can't help but wonder when and where we will see them again......what changes will have taken place.....what stories there will be to tell......

Magnum....you silly little Mustang....you will always be special!
